The Golden Prince Who Died Old at Fifteen

A brilliant young prince died mysteriously with the withered organs of an old man.

He was the “Golden Boy” of the Tudors, but his death turned the throne into a bloodbath. Arthur Tudor was the eldest son, a brilliant prince, and the husband of Catherine of Aragon. But just months after his wedding, his body began to fail. In the spring of 1502, a mysterious “Sweating Sickness” swept through the castle. While his young wife recovered, Arthur’s lungs filled with fluid and his skin turned a deathly gray. He died in a cold room in Ludlow Castle at just fifteen years old. But the horror didn’t end with his death. When the doctors performed the autopsy, they were shocked to find that his internal organs were “withered and small as if he were an old man.” His death didn’t just break his parents’ hearts—it paved the way for his younger brother, Henry VIII, to take the throne. If Arthur had lived, the six wives, the beheadings, and the bloodiest era of English history would never have happened. History changed because a teenager’s body rotted from the inside out.

Interesting Fact Arthur’s death was so unexpected that his father, King Henry VII, was too terrified to attend the funeral. He feared that the “curse” that killed his son would jump to him. He spent weeks locked in a room, refusing to see anyone, while the funeral procession carried his son’s body through the pouring rain to Worcester Cathedral.
