The Bridge That Danced Itself Apart

Drivers nickname a brand-new suspension bridge 'Galloping Gertie' for the way it moves, and then it moves one time too many.

On 1st July 1940, the Tacoma Narrows Bridge opened to traffic across Puget Sound in Washington State. It was one of the longest suspension bridges in the world. Its deck was unusually slender. Its lines were clean. Newspapers called it “graceful” and “beautiful.”

Drivers called it something else: “Galloping Gertie.”

The Horror

Almost from the first day, the bridge moved. In moderate winds it developed a slow, rolling wave along its length. Cars rode up and down as if crossing a frozen ocean. Structural engineers knew bridges flexed. Nobody had seen one gallop like this.

On 7th November 1940, winds of around 40 mph blew steadily along the Narrows. At first, the bridge performed its usual up‑and‑down motion. Then the pattern changed. The deck started to twist — one side rising while the other sank, in a see‑saw motion about the centreline.

This was not just “flexing.” It was aerodynamic flutter: the wind feeding energy into the structure at exactly the wrong frequency. Each cycle made the motion bigger. Film footage from that day shows the deck twisting by more than 45 degrees, the towers swaying, the roadway buckling into smooth S‑curves.

Engineers and photographers were on the bridge. Some tried to reach its centre and study the motion. They were forced back by the violence of the twisting. Within hours, steel hangers snapped. Sections of deck tore free and plunged into the water.

One car was stranded near the centre. Inside was a cocker spaniel named Tubby. The owner, a newspaper copy editor named Leonard Coatsworth, abandoned the car and crawled to safety. A later attempt by a man named Professor Farquharson to rescue the dog failed — Tubby panicked and bit him. Moments later, the span where the car stood collapsed. The dog died.

No humans were killed. The bridge was not so merciful to itself. In a few hours, an engineering marvel became twisted scrap in the tide.

The cause was subtle but brutal. The deck was too thin and too stiff torsionally, with inadequate aerodynamic damping. Its lines were beautiful to the eye and lethal in the wind. The disaster became the textbook example of what happens when elegance outruns understanding.

The Modern Relic

The fallen pieces of Galloping Gertie still lie on the seabed of Puget Sound, now forming an artificial reef rich with marine life. The modern replacement bridge, opened in 1950 and expanded in the 2000s, stands alongside the site — heavier, stiffer, and explicitly designed not to repeat the mistake.

The original collapse was captured on 16mm film. That footage is still shown to engineering students worldwide. They watch the deck ripple and twist, the towers sway, the dog’s car rocking alone, and the final moment when steel fails and concrete falls.

The most haunting detail is not the fall itself but the motion before it: a bridge dancing itself to death. A structure so visually perfect that it didn’t just break — it performed its own destruction in full view, at exactly the frequency nature chose for it.

The wreck is still underwater. The film is still on projectors. Every modern long‑span bridge carries the ghost of Galloping Gertie in its calculations.
